SEN Provision

Support for our New Intake

Through their first four weeks at Canons, our New Year 7 intake tutor groups receive full time support from a designated Learning Support Assistant (LSA). The aim is to make the transition to high school as smooth as possible, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of new students in order to best support their progress through the school.

 Intervention Programme 

The reading ages of our students are assessed in Year 7 and again in Year 9, allowing us to identify students who need extra support with their reading. We also use standardised tests and data provided by teachers to help us identify students who may benefit from one of our intervention programmes, which cover topics including literacy, numeracy, organisation and social skills.

 Student Passports

Some of our students are issued with a Student Passport in order to help teachers to provide personalised learning. Parents/carers are invited to attend a meeting, along with the student and a member of the Learning Development Department, to create the student-centred passport. The passport will be reviewed termly so that information is kept up to date and teachers are aware of any identified special educational needs.

 In-class Support

Wherever possible, students identified as in need of additional support are helped by a Learning Support Assistant (LSAs) within their lessons. Occasionally students may be withdrawn from a lesson in order that they can receive additional one-to-one or small group teaching, however our philosophy is for students with SEN to spend the vast majority of the school day in lessons with their peers. We believe strongly in helping our students gain independence and prepare for post-school life and the way in which our LSAs work reflects this philosophy.

 Core Support at KS4

Students in need of extra support in English and Maths during Year 9, 10 and 11 can take Core Support as one of their option choices. This enrichment course gives them 5 hours of English and Maths intervention per week, taught by specialist teachers. If we believe that Core Support is an appropriate choice for a student, this will be discussed during our extensive Information, Advice and Guidance programme, where students and families are invited to attend a meeting with a senior member of staff ahead of making their option choices.  

The Behaviour Support Team (BeST)

Where students are experiencing difficulty in managing their behaviour or in their relationships with their peers, we may refer them to the BeST team. Here students work either one-to-one or in small groups with a member of the team. The aim is to quickly address problems with behaviour and social relations by providing strategies to enable students to modify their own behaviour - the ultimate objective being to ensure that learning can take place in lessons without disruption or distraction.
