KS3 & KS4 CURRICULUM

KS3 CURRICULUM

In Years 7 and 8 we have implemented an approach to the curriculum which builds upon the subject specialist knowledge by prioritising:
  • Skills for Learning – Students learn how to develop personal, learning and thinking skills including being Team Workers, Reflective Learners, Self-Managers, Creative Thinkers, Independent Enquirers and Effective Participants.
At Key Stage 3 students are taught in  7 tutor groups. We ensure our teaching is focussed on meeting the needs of each individual student, whatever their ability or stage of development.

In the second half of each term students in Years 7 and 8 are set Creative Learning Projects by subject areas working in collaboration. We ask parents to support students in being able to complete their homework by checking that it has been done and signing their student planner, which the tutor will then check in school. In addition to the regular timetable, students have the opportunity to have specialist lessons on a musical instrument.

Curriculum Maps

As parents, carers, prospective or current students, exactly what is taught and therefore learnt at Canons in every subject and at every Key Stage, is a crucial question. In this Curriculum Map section of our website, you will find the answers to this question. The aim of this area is to provide a set of Curriculum Maps outlining what your child (or you as a student) will learn in each subject; when particular units are taught and what the assessments will be.  The purpose of these is to make transparent exactly what is being taught when across the academic year and to provide you with an overview of what topics will be taught in each subject.

Teachers have spent a lot of time putting these together and particular thought has gone into the statements of intention which set out what is at the heart of each subject and what it is fundamentally about. As parents or carers, this would be a great starting place for conversations with your child about what subjects they are learning at school and as current or prospective students, these statements will be important for you to reflect on what you learn, subjects you particularly enjoy and choices you may want to make in future.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

KS4 CURRICULUM

GCSE English and Maths courses last three years and students are entered for examinations in these subjects at the end of Year 11. Science is offered at Core, Additional and Further Additional level and students taking Further Additional Science are also able to take an A-level bridging course in Year 11 as part of their science lessons.

It is very important that students make the most of their PSHCE lessons to ensure that they understand the options process and are fully informed of what the GCSE, BTEC, Enrichment and bridging courses entail.
We want to make sure that all students have a positive learning experience and we believe that our curriculum will motivate and engage students, challenging them to achieve to the very best of their ability. Being able to take up to four qualifications in Year 9 and Year 10 allows students choice and flexibility in deciding on the most appropriate time for them to take particular courses. This also allows for Year 11 students to focus on English, Maths and Science in Year 11 as some of their examinations will have been completed before then.
