Congratulations to our Sixth Formers from all of us at Canons High School and Sixth Form!

At Canons High School, we take football very seriously. Seriously enough, that our amazing Librarian Miss Baah decided to plan a range of events for our students to build up the anticipation for the World Cup! 

A range of football related books were ready for our students! 

Each Thursday in June, there was a new activity for our students! 

4th June- Students creating World Cup posters throughout the event.

11th June- A display of footballs available for students to borrow from the library.

18th June-A scavenger hunt!

25^th June- Students to create a Canons High school Chant and perform at library.

On Tuesday the 23^rd June, a select group of Y10's attended Oxford University's Physics Department to explore how physics can help tackle environmental challenges.  This was particularly apt for the heatwave we were having that week!

Staying safe with PPE even during the heatwave!

Physics is key to understanding and solving environmental challenges.  The students spent the day learning all about the current cutting edge research in this field; primarily how to improve efficiency of solar panels, and how researchers use physics, supercomputers and satellite data to create models to understand how our climate is changing. 

A warning before entering the labs!

The students started the day with a climate game, revealing some jaw stopping statistics.  They then moved onto visiting the state of the art labs, where materials were being tested to for their durability and ability to cope with intense weather changes. 

Learning about the lasers and machinery!

They got to see how lasers can detect imperfections in materials, looking at how the light is reflected and at what angles and speeds.  They took part in some hand-on activities using their knowledge of electricity to build little solar models and investigate different types of charge.

To end the day the students got to sit in a panel session with the researchers that had been with them throughout the day. 

They got to ask questions and learn a little bit more about the life of a researcher, how they got to where they are now, how research can be funded, and what a typical day in the life may look like!

this is all a big part of your future and one of the most fascinating (and perhaps lucrative) areas of science!
