Taster Day: King's College London

June 6th

Their exhibition "All Adds Up" is about global discoveries in maths and their contributions to the development of maths from across the world such as abacuses from China, Mayan number systems, Latin squares from Korea and Ukrainian sphere packing. The exhibits have been created by the artist Zarah Hussain and shows the visual excitement of mathematics.

The visit consisted of viewing the exhibition, a mathematical talk, an interactive workshop (investigating polygons), attended a lecture on mathematical discoveries and concept beyond classrooms.

The visit finished with a campus tour showcasing what university life is like for students.

The next stage is for our Year 9 group to compete with other schools and to produce a piece of work which, if selected, will be showcased in the Kings college exhibition for Public viewing.

Everybody is working really hard on it!

Greenwich 'Maths Time'

June 26th

Seventy two of our Year 9 Maths students travelled to the Old Royal Naval College campus of the University of Greenwich to participate in MATHS TIME - the festival of maths and its applications.

Our students took part in several interesting and thought provoking lectures and sessions, including Cath Moore on 'Encryption', Aoife Hunt MBE on 'The Maths of Crowds', Kelly Klus on 'Why Study Maths Beyond GCSE?', Robyn Goldsmith on 'Back to the Future with Mathematical Techniques' and Rob Eastaway on 'The Maths of Money Games'.

Our students also got to see this very famous, historical and often filmed Greenwich site, right next to the River Thames.

Arch Climbing

June 27th

Year 10 & 12 reward trip to the Arch Climbing Centre in Colindale.

Launched 15 years ago, the Arch was London's first 'Bouldering' centre.

As apposed to wall climbing, bouldering takes place at low level, with no safety ropes and thick crash mats to cushion any fall. Problem solving (sometimes whilst hanging upside-down) and patience are more valuable in this branch of climbing than pure speed or strength. 

Instructors are literally standing close by and our students had a great time. They shouldn't hang about before giving it another go!
