Afternoon Tea at the Athenaeum
Behind the scenes special visit... with cakes thrown in!
Nov 20th
Our Year 9 Food Technology students enjoyed a very special visit to the glamorous Athenaeum 5-Star Hotel in Mayfair, London.
They are preparing for their own Christmas Lunch presentation, so a visit to see how one of the very best hotels and restaurants in London do it was a fantastic opportunity not to be missed.
The Athenaeum is a 5-star, award winning, family run luxury hotel and residence, located opposite the tranquility of Royal Green Park..
It was a top chef from this establishment that joined us recently at Canons as we judged our FutureChef competitors in our school heat of this ongoing, culinary competition.
Presentation is everything!
Students were able to see the inner workings of the pastry kitchen, bar and restaurant floor. Students also had the opportunity to pick the brains of the Pastry chef and got to try the Hotels 5 star Afternoon Tea!
Incredible and decadent pastries being 'taste tested' by our students.
It's a tough job but somebody has to do it.
Every Month is Black History Month
Nov 22nd
We welcomed back amazing historian, activist and inspirational speaker Tony Warner, to talk to our Year 7 students about Black History.
Tony Warner established 'Black History Walks' back in 2007. BHW explores the thousands of years of African/Caribbean history in London via 15 guided walks, bus tours, river cruises, talks, films and courses.
Tony also visits schools, enlightening and fascinating them with his knowledge of our countries black history, and not just from when the 'Empire Windrush' steamship arrived in London from the Caribbean in 1948!
Thank you Tony for coming to visit us again.
Eye Opening!
Tony's presentations are always really interesting, containing eye-opening and thought provoking facts and information.
DID YOU KNOW?
Some of the very first black visitors to Britain were Roman soldiers. Recruited in Africa and finding themselves posted to the most northerly borders of the Roman Empire, 2,000 years ago!
Growth & Grit.
Rugby Tournament at Harrow School.
Nov 21st
Well done to our boys squad who took part in this years annual charity SOHK rugby tournament, held on the very cold and hard rugby pitches of the world famous Harrow School.
150 boys from across London and Hertfordshire took part, with Harrow School's own Rugby 1st XV acting as mentors and referees. They cheered, they encouraged and they made every player feel valued.
For our boys this was their first taste of competition rugby and it took them a while to get into their stride and accept this is how rugby goes.
Rugby is a very hands-on, physical game but played with good sportsmanship. It can seem strange and a bit unsettling to accept a friendly hand up from someone who has just crashed you onto the ground.
Mr M Barrett encouraging our lads to keep on going and keep on getting up again.
"Rugby’s not just a game; it’s a life lesson in disguise."
The School of Hard Knocks is a charity that exists to empower and support individuals who are living in complex and challenging circumstances.
They believe rugby teaches character, teamwork, and emotional resilience. It’s tough, intense and demands discipline – the perfect recipe for personal growth.
We saw some incredible stories unfold – boys who faced challenges head-on and made huge strides in their confidence and skills.
Huge thanks to Harrow School for their hospitality and support, and of course to SOHK for their amazing schools programme.
Learn with the Lords
Nov 22nd
We were extremely pleased to welcome Kulveer Singh Ranger, a peer sitting in the House of Lords.
In this capacity he is addressed as 'The Right Honourable, The Lord Ranger of Northwood'.
Kulveer is an English strategy and communications executive who successfully worked with Boris Johnstone during his time as Mayor of London.
His grandfather Gurnam Singh Sahni set up the first British-Asian newspaper, The Punjab Times, in the mid-1960s.
Learn with the Lords is a schools programme which offers the unique opportunity for students to interact with a member of the House of Lords.
Kulveer Ranger met with staff before delivering an informative presentation to members of our Student Government, which they found very interesting. A Q&A session followed.
Our students enjoyed learning more about the vital but often misunderstood role of the House of Lords in the UK Parliament.
Thank you very much The Lord Ranger of Northwood for visiting us.
Selling Yourself to a Uni!
Personal Statement Masterclass
Nov 26th
Universities receive thousands of applications from hopeful young students every year, but they don't know anything about these potential Undergraduate Students, apart from the grades they are predicted to achieve in their studies.
This where your Personal Statement comes into play.
UCAS describes your personal statement thus:
"The personal statement is your opportunity to talk about you, and why you want to enrol on a particular course.
You should describe the ambitions, skills, and experience that'll make you suitable for the course."
Our Year 13 students were therefore very pleased to see Ross Pickering when he came in earlier this month to present to them on this very subject.
Ross is the UK Student Recruitment and Schools Liaison Assistant from City University, London.
He was able to impart to our Sixth Formers what they needed to know about selling themselves, including what Universities are looking for, what they are trying to avoid and how to make yourself standout in a field of thousands.
Thank you Ross for your visit.
Visit By Stag Lane Primary School
"Ask me anything".
Meeting the Principal of your Local High School
Nov 27th
We have always had very strong links and a healthy working relationship with Stag Lane Primary School.
They are our close neighbours and the largest compliment of new Year 7 students are always joining us from Stag Lane.
Canons High Principal Mr David Bullock was keen to meet these potential new Canons students, and for them to meet him.
After an introduction and a bit about himself, he bravely threw the floor open and told the Stag Lane pupils to
"Ask me anything!"
...and they did...
"How much homework will we get?"
"What trips can we go on?"
"What are the rules about mobile phones?"
"Is there a girls football team?"
"What food is there in the canteen?"
"Do we need to wear ties?"
...and many, many more.
But they were exactly the sort of important and clever questions which you would expect young and curious, if not a bit apprehensive pupils, to ask.
We are looking forward to another large group of pupils from Stag Lane visiting us for more of the same at the very end of the month.
Movember 2024
The 15th Year Canons High has taken part!
Nov 30th
Canons High has taken part in the annual moustache-growing, fund-rising event that takes place every November since 2010 - that's 15 years now!
The size of the team taking part has varied over the years as colleagues come and go, and for the last two years it's just been Mr D Fowler from our Media Resources Team taking part.
Nevertheless, the support he has received from his friends and colleagues at Canons High has been nothing short of incredible.
This year Mr Fowler and Canons High have raised a wonderful
£749
for the Movember Foundation.
Thank you very, very much to everyone who donated, supported and said kind things about Mr Fowler moustache.
"we will wear our moustaches like a badge of honour, raising awareness and starting conversations about men's health issues."
The Canons High Movember campaigns have raised just over £11,500 since that first event back in 2010
MOVEMBER - The Story
Back in 2003, two mates in Australia were moaning about how the once macho moustache, or Mo as its colloquially know down under, had all but disappeared from fashion trends. They joked about bringing it back and convinced 28 friends to join them in growing a mo.
"You should get sponsored?"
The next year, 2004, they decided to do it again but raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
450 MoBros took part and raised AUD 54,000 (approx GBP 26,000 at 2004 rates).
in 2006, New Zealand joined in with the month now known as Movember, and 2008 saw Canada, Spain and the UK join in officially.
The USA joins in 2009, whilst 2010 sees Canons High School men, including Mr Fowler, take part for the first time.
That same year, the number of men taking part in Movember topped the one million mark for the first time.
Fast forward to 2022 which saw the number of men, and women, officially raising money for Movember through 'growing a mo' or other means, almost touch 7 million, with over 1,250 men's health projects globally funded since 2003.
Mr Fowler, now clean shaven, handing over Mrs O'Grady's 5Ibs of chocolate.
Each Movember, Mr Fowler also organises a fun, additional fund raising activity. This year it was the Big Movember Raffle again.
Tickets were £5 each and the first prize was 5Ib (2.3kg) of good quality chocolate.
This vast amount of chocolate was won, just in time for Christmas, by Mrs S O'Grady, and she was thrilled.
Mr Fowler, as he appeared last week whilst still in full Movember mode!
