Intermediate UKMT Results

February 5th | Mrs Balani

What a fantastic achievement and one to be celebrated by the whole school community!

We are incredibly proud of our students who took part in this year’s Intermediate UKMT Maths Challenge.

A total of 90 students from Years 9–11 sat this demanding mathematical problem-solving competition, which is designed to stretch students well beyond routine classroom questions.

The students showed determination, resilience and a real commitment to tackling challenging problems. We are especially delighted to share that two of our Year 11 students have qualified for the next round!

All participants will receive certificates recognising their efforts, with Gold, Silver and Bronze awards reflecting particularly high scores.

GCSE Sushi Masterclass

February 12th

Our Year 11 GCSE Food and Nutrition students were surprised with a Sushi class hosted by Ms Yip and Ms Campbell. They were very curious as to what exactly the plan was for their practical lesson, but both of their teachers did not reveal even a peep until the day itself.

Ms Campbell began her lesson with an introductory presentation about the history behind sushi. Sushi chefs (itamae) must undergo years of rigorous training to master the art. With some training lasting a whole decade!

Our students didn't need to train for a decade thankfully!

They were shown how making sushi demands expert knife skills to cut and clean each fish in the appropriate manner. It also involves creating perfectly formed rice, with the right balance of rice and vinegar to complement the fish it is being served with. Rice recipes can also be closely guarded secrets amongst sushi restaurants.

Ms Yip ever so kindly pre-prepared the rice so the students had significant time for it to cool before rolling. They chose their fillings from the provided selection, with many choosing a simple but tasty combination of crab-sticks, carrot and cucumber.

Using bamboo mats, or makisu in japanese is the traditional method of rolling sushi rolls. First, a nori seaweed sheet is placed on the bamboo mat, then a thin layer of seasoned sushi rice. the fillings in the center to finish. The roll must then be sealed with a little water before squeezed and shaped using the bamboo mat, to finally form the maki roll.

Hard at work!

Ms Campbell had a special mention for Romario and Movindu, who were thoroughly engaged in the lesson, and left with the biggest smiles!
