Particle Physics Masterclass
Year 12 Physics visit to Cambridge University!
April 6th | Mrs Chaggar
On Tuesday 14th April our Y13 Physics students attended a Particle Physics Masterclass even at Cavendish Laboratories at Cambridge University.

Particle physics is the branch of science that explores the most fundamental building blocks of the universe—particles such as quarks, electrons, and neutrinos—and the forces that govern how they interact. Over the past few decades, it has transformed our understanding of the universe and it's origins through breakthroughs like the discovery of the Higgs boson, which revealed how particles acquire mass. Today the field is rapidly evolving, driven by powerful accelerators, precision experiments, and advanced simulations.

The day was a mix of seminars and laboratory sessions focusing on particle physics, quantum mechanics and astrophysics.

Heads down, brains working!
They learnt about the past, current and future work being carried out in these fields with a focus on the work being done at the large hadron collider at CERN.
Here, researchers are pushing beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, searching for clues to mysteries such as dark matter, the imbalance between matter and antimatter, and the unification of forces.
It was inspiring to see what studying A-level physics could lead to and the exciting projects our students could be a part of in the future!
