World Book Day
March 5th
World Book Day was created by UNESCO in 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. It is marked in over 100 countries around the globe, and celebrated during the first week of March. This year, it was celebrated across the UK on the 5th March!
Our amazing staff outfits!
Here at Canons High School, we celebrate World Book Day through our teachers getting involved, dressing up as a range of characters to promote reading to our students.

World Book Day 2026 was taken extremely seriously by our staff members, all trying to dress in outfits that have not been circulated or seen in previous years. This can often mean some teachers pull out all the stocks to ensure their outfits are better than last years. This year, our Headteacher Mr Bullock pulled off an impressive costume, dressing as Cruella de Vil, with the Senior Leadership Team matching as the dalmatians.
Teachers used this opportunity to express their creativity, hand-crafting their own costumes too. From Roald Dahl's Witches, to Harry Potter and Voldemort, to Dick Bruna's Miffy, there were a wide range of book characters walking the corridors!
Miss Czubkowska and Miss Cooney both matched as Katniss Everdeen. With Miss Cooney even bringing in her own prop of a real archery bow (without the arrows for safety of course).

Miss Snyder made sure to represent the skills of the art department by making an impressive costume as a life-sized dictionary. She filled the pages with definitions for some of the commonly used slang terms you hear circulating throughout the school. These definitions are definitely needed for many of us to understand the current language....
As stated on the World Book Day Website:
"Despite the many benefits, reading for fun is in decline. Our mission is to promote reading for fun, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own."
We hope this year our staff outfits inspired some of our students to pick up a new book, or revisit an old loved classic!
