Teacher of Mathematics

Overview
The Maths Faculty at Canons High School is an organised, structured, supportive and friendly place to work. Our vision is steeped in the notion that potential is limitless, for both students and staff:
It is an exciting time to join this faculty on our journey to make a rapid improvement. We are seeking passionate and reflective practitioners that do not waver in their belief that every single child can be successful in our beautiful subject. Over the past year, the running of the Maths Faculty has been revamped under a new faculty leadership team. Efficient operational, communication and behaviour processes ensure that there are no logistical barriers for teachers to be able to plan and teach purposeful lessons for their classes. We take management of workload, and staff well-being seriously. For this reason, we have recently embedded a new evidence informed feedback, minimal marking and homework policy. We also chit-chat over snacks together every Friday at break.
We believe in a “stage, not age” and “depth before breadth” mastery approach to maths education. We know that students make speedy progress in maths when we teach them maths that is on the cusp of what they do know. We subscribe to completemaths.com CLASSROOM and TUTOR to support student learning and teacher planning. We have a suite of fully resourced, high quality centralised lesson plans for all year groups developed collaboratively, based on current research and evidence around forward-facing methods of teaching. These form a starting point for planning, though we do expect teachers to adapt these to suit their classes and their teaching style. We also subscribe to completemaths.com CPD college and engage together in a bespoke programme of subject specific CPD during faculty meetings.
We teach all year groups in classes shaped by an element of setting, although there is some range of prior attainment within each group. Students are currently set, from KS3 onwards based on KS2 results, CATs scores and internal assessments. Student progress is monitored regularly through a variety of assessment. Students requiring additional support are identified from as early as year 7 and the correct level of intervention is put in place for individuals and small groups.
Pupils study a challenging syllabus and develop their independent learning skills. We encourage pupils to challenge themselves and become good problem solvers from when they first arrive in preparation for GCSE and eventually A-level study. At GCSE and A-level, the department currently prepares pupils for the Edexcel syllabus. A-level mathematics has always been a very popular option with two full classes in each of the Sixth Form year groups.
We encourage visits from our external partners and would be very happy to arrange a visit or a phone call for any potential applicants.
